11th of November – Day of Márton – is the beginning of winter. The closing date of the economic year has been commemorated in Hungary with festivities held over the period of many centuries. This is the last day preceding the 40 day Advent fasting, the last opportunity for holding a great feast with huge diner parties and cheerful celebrations.

On the Day of Márton, in wine-producing regions people eat goose dishes and sample this year’s wine.

In appreciation of this tradition, the IVth Day of Márton Wine Festival will be held between 7 and 9 of November in Hotel Danubius Budapest, with the participation of the Wine and Market Magazine. 55 winemakers from all over Hungary will exhibit their products on this event, which will be enhanced by gastronomical and cultural programs.

In many wine cellars of the Villány region tourist already have the opportunity to sample this year’s rose and Portuguiser. Sampling of this year’s wine is accompanied with various types of festivities, such as toasting the new wine, goose dishes, recall folk traditions, twilight march with lanterns and other exciting programs. In this region festivities related to the Day of Márton are continuing until the end of November.

Similar festivities are held all over Hungary. On the second weekend of November this year’s wine is sampled in every wine region of Hungary, go together with gastronomic programs. Do not hesitate to visit you favorite cellar.

After fierce competition, the title of the “Most Pleasant Vineyard of Hungary 2014″ was finally awarded.

The jury of the magazine “Bor és Piac” (Wine and Market) assessed the condition of the vineyard, the cellar, the wine house, the wines and other presentations of the business, including communication, environmental protection efforts of the cellar and the “total impression” or “harmony” of the property, using a system of 100 award points.

This year Bock Cellar from Villány won the title of the “Most Pleasant Vineyard of Hungary”, followed by Vylyan from Kisharsány and Béresbirtok from Erőbénye.

The intensity of the competition can be illustrated by the fact that Vylyan and Béresbirtok, as well as the Abbey Cellar from Pannonhalma – which was also a very close contender – received the maximum number of points from 4-4 members of the jury.

The “Red Wine Festival of Villány 2014″ will attract red wine lovers to Villány on the first weekend of October, when famous wine cellars, spirit houses and craftsmen will offer their products to the visitors.

The first national sparkling wine contest was organized on 18 July in Villány.

On the first day of the Villány Rose Festival domestic entries were judged; awards were presented to the producers on Saturday, 19 July.

35 entries from 26 winemakers from 9 wine regions were tasted by the jury.

Over and above gold and silver medals, the Champion Award was granted to the best sparkling wine. Only really fine wines were entered into the contest; none of the entries was rejected.
