Portugieser du Monde, the international exhibition of Portugieser wines and winemakers, was held the second time at the end of April.
Thanks to Swab immigrants, the Portugieser variety of grapes has been established everywhere in Central Europe. The latest trend of moving towards lighter, more drinkable red wines may provide additional stimulus to the advancement of Portugieser, this light and fruity wine. So far Portugieser has not been much in the limelight, but now it is ready to be discovered, taken more seriously and further improved by winemakers.
Experts from 9 countries with huge international experience made up the panel of judges in the city of Pécs. This year 72 wines from 6 countries entered into the competition, more than 20 % of the samples originated from abroad. Tasting of the samples resulted in three Champion Awards and 19 Gold Medals.
In the category of Portugieser-based cuvees Tiffán Cellar from Villány won a Champion Award for their Old Fashion Cuvée 2012 (Régimódi cuvee), whilst Terra Parna – from Slovakia – won the category of Portugieser vintage 2012 or before for their Modry Portugal. Weingut Weinfried from Austria also collected an award for their Granat Portugieser 2013. The wine from Tiffán Cellar was the result of marriage of Portugieser and Kadarka, both of them grown in Ördögárok-dűlő.
